Bangladesh is a country at the mercy of climate change, lying for the most part less than 30 feet above sea level. Bangladeshis are already witnessing the creep of saltwater inland. If sea level were to rise by 3 feet, a third of the country's coastline could be flooded - displacing 20 million people from their homes.
With this backdrop to her story, Anam is frustrated with climate change skeptics. As a way of addressing the skepticism surrounding climate change, her Big Idea is "that all citizens of countries [with] high per-capita carbon emissions have saltwater randomly piped into their homes." Under her scenario, the seawater would arrive at random, without warning and would bear no relation to whether or not the particular inhabitants of that home are large carbon emitters themselves.
You get the point. Radical idea…or just a silly pipe dream (no pun intended)? What do you think?
